As of a little after 5:30 p.m. ET, one Twitter user noted that Biden's tweet was dead but was still getting engagement.

Biden was one of several high-profile figures whose accounts also appeared to have been hacked and featured identical messages to the one in Biden's original tweet.

Twitter accounts belonging to Uber, Apple, Square's Cash App, and billionaires Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Warren Buffett were also hacked.

Several of the scam tweets were deleted shortly after they were posted, only to be reposted minutes later.

A Twitter spokesperson told Business Insider the company is looking into the activity. And the Twitter Support account sent out a tweet saying, "We are aware of a security incident impacting accounts on Twitter. We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone shortly."

The Biden campaign also released a statement saying, "Twitter locked down the account immediately following the breach and removed the related tweet. We remain in touch with Twitter on the matter."

Avery Hartmans contributed reporting.
