Crosscall has revealed its new ultra-resistant, waterproof smartphone — at $800, the Crosscall Trekker-X4 will be on sale from October 25, 2018. The French company is keeping up with giants like Apple and Samsung by capitalising on a niche market — outdoor sports enthusiasts.

In a sector dominated by the US giants Apple and Google, as well as Asian developers such as Samsung, Huawei, and OnePlus, you might be surprised to see French manufacturer Crosscall's name crop up.
That said, the developers are making a scene after unveiling their new ultra-resistant smartphone, the Crosscall Trekker-X4.
Aimed at athletes and outdoor sports enthusiasts, the phone proves there's still room in Europe for a high-end technology product company.
At the launch press conference on October 2, Cyril Vidal, CEO and founder of Crosscall said: "This product is the culmination of Crosscall, and tells the story of our company's ten-year history. We're at a turning point."
Its waterproof, resilient build and quality of shots are what seem to have drawn in award-winning champions such as professional mountain snowboarder, Xavier De Le Rue and explorer Mike Horn.
"We want to have adventures without restriction, whatever the conditions — we want to share experiences," explained Vidal. Founded in 2008, Crosscall released its first fleet of phones 2009, after which the company sold 150,000 models in the space of five years.
The Trekker-X4 — resistant to up to 55 degrees down to -20 degrees — will be available on October 25 for roughly $800, which may seem a high price at first glance but still comes in at well below those of the latest Apple and Samsung releases.
The company of 130 employees has made the choice to focus on video, against the tide of current manufacturers whose sights are set on photo functions.
By collaborating with 1600 of its users, Crosscall was able to detect the gaps in their products: simplicity, video, angle of view, connectivity.
"Our users work outside, play sports, enjoy life to the fullest — whether it's down a ski descent or the first steps of a child. Video is the best way to capture those moments, "said Bertrand Czaicki, Crosscall's product management and design director.
The phone's developers then designed the phone to incorporate the same Action Cam feature that made GoPro so successful.
The optical system is another major innovation — it incorporates panomorphic technology to allow the user to retain the same resolution across the entire surface of an image, almost like the human eye. In contrast with a conventional 88-degree wide-angle lens, Crosscall promises to go up to 170 degrees.

Currently active in 12 countries in Europe, Crosscall achieved a turnover of $92 million in 2017 and, distributed in 20,000 outlets, Crosscall is expected to achieve around $110-120 million in revenue in 2018.
As well as signing agreements with four French telecom operators, the company has signed similar agreements in Italy, Germany, Slovenia, Australia, and countries in Africa.
